The plant is an epiphyte growing on tree trunks in open forests or at forest margins at elevations of 300–1,500 m (980–4,920 ft).
Key Characteristics
- Flowers: Produces 100 to over 200 small, deeply fragrant flowers that are typically white with vibrant pink or purple spots. The lip is usually a deep purplish-pink.
- Blooming Season: Blooms primarily in the spring and early summer (April to June), depending on regional climates.
- Growth Habit: It is a monopodial epiphyte, meaning it grows on the trunks of host trees, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air through thick, fleshy aerial roots.
Cultivation & Care
Because they are epiphytes, foxtail orchids require specialized care to mimic their natural, airy tropical environment.
- Light: Grow in bright, filtered, or diffused sunlight. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can easily scorch the thick leaves.
- Watering: Requires abundant water during the active growing season (spring and summer), but the roots must dry out quickly. Because of this, they are best grown bare-root in wooden slatted baskets or mounted on cork rather than potted in dense soil. Reduce watering in the cooler winter months.
- Air & Humidity: Constant air circulation is essential to prevent root rot and fungal diseases. They thrive in high humidity (ideally 70% to 80%).
- Fertilizer: Feed with a dilute, balanced orchid fertilizer every week or two during the active growth period.
Cultural & Medicinal Significance
In Assam, Rhynchostylis retusa is highly revered as an emblem of cultural identity. Young women weave the sprays into their hair during the Bihu spring dances. Traditional tribal medicine across Northeast India also utilizes extracts of the plant as a tonic and for wound healing.
